Product Introduction
Product Overview
Trisodium Methylglycine Diacetate (MGDA-3NA) is a new biodegradable chelating agent. Product is a light yellow transparent liquid, MGDA-3NA content ≥39%, pH (1% solution) 10.0-12.0, NTA content ≤0.1%. MGDA is a derivative of the natural amino acid glycine, offering excellent chelating ability and complete biodegradability, making it an ideal substitute for traditional chelating agents like EDTA and NTA.
Core Advantages
- BiodegradableMGDA can be fully biodegraded by microorganisms in the natural environment, aligning with green and sustainable development trends.
- Efficient chelationExcellent chelating ability for Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, Fe³⁺, Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺ and other metal ions
- Low NTA ContentNTA content ≤0.1%, far lower than traditional products, safer and more eco-friendly
- High-concentration formula39% high content, higher active ingredients
- Good SolubilityLight yellow transparent liquid, easy to formulate and use

MGDA-3NA is a powerful chelating agent with excellent chelating ability for multiple metal ions.
- Calcium and magnesium ionsEffectively softens water, prevents scale formation
- Iron ionEspecially under high pH conditions, it effectively chelates trivalent iron ions, preventing discoloration and precipitation.
- Copper, Zinc IonsStable in washing and personal care formulations
- Manganese ionPrevents oxidation and discoloration
Its stability constant (log K) is approximately 13-14, providing good chelation for most divalent and trivalent metal ions.
MGDA-3NA exhibits excellent stability in high pH environments, which is one of its key advantages.
- Strong alkali resistanceMaintains excellent chelating ability at pH 12 and above without decomposition or failure
- Good thermal stabilityCan be used at temperatures up to 60°C, suitable for hot water washing formulations
- Hydrolysis resistantNot prone to hydrolysis under alkaline conditions, maintaining long-term stability.
This makes it especially suitable for applications requiring high alkalinity, such as laundry powders and dish detergents.
MGDA-3NA is a truly biodegradable chelating agent:
- Degradation rateBiodegradation rate >80% in 28 days, compliant with OECD 302B
- Degradation mechanismFirst decomposes under enzyme action into iminodiacetic acid and acetate intermediates
- Final productCompletely mineralizes into carbon dioxide, water, and nitrogen, leaving no harmful residues
- Environmentally FriendlyNo long-term accumulation risk in soil or water, does not affect microbial activity
MGDA-3NA has excellent compatibility with various surfactants:
- Anionic SurfactantGood compatibility with LAS, AES, AOS, etc., with no negative interactions
- Nonionic SurfactantSuch as alkoxylates, with good synergistic effect
- Amphoteric surfactantStable Compatibility
- Cationic SurfactantPay attention to formulation design; pre-testing is recommended
Compared to EDTA and NTA, MGDA-3NA does not form insoluble complexes with anionic surfactants, avoiding formulation cloudiness and performance degradation.
It is normal for MGDA-3NA liquid products to appear light yellow, due to:
- Sodium Salt PropertiesMGDA-3NA trisodium salt has a slight yellow color, which is its chemical characteristic
- Production processTrace impurities may be generated during synthesis, causing slight discoloration.
- Storage FactorsLong-term storage may slightly deepen the color, but does not affect quality
The light yellow color does not affect performance. In cleaning and detergent formulations, the typical dosage is 0.5-2%, and the color does not impact the final product appearance.
MGDA-3NA itself is non-corrosive to metals, but precautions should be taken when using:
- Storage ContainerPE, PP, and stainless steel 304/316 containers are recommended; avoid carbon steel and aluminum.
- Conveying systemStainless steel, plastic, or corrosion-resistant lined pipes should be used
- Compatibility NotesAvoid direct mixing with strong acids to prevent corrosion from excessively low local pH.
- Cleaning recommendationsRinse equipment with clean water after use to prevent residual solution concentration
At normal use concentrations (0.5-2%), MGDA-3NA is safe for stainless steel, plastic and other materials.
